THE COMMENTARY
LYRICS

inch by inch it’s a struggle

day by day it’s a day away

minute to minute

i’m afraid i’ll never get past right here

i got plates spinning left and right

i got a ball spinning on my nose

her payment’s late, she wants a fight

my lexus blew a hose

i got lines ringing off the hook

i got lines ringing in my head

her project’s worth a second look

but my prospects may be dead

inch by inch it’s a struggle

day by day it’s a day away

minute to minute

i’m afraid i’ll never get past right here

i got friends playing everywhere

i got kids playing little league

the meat is fat but the fat don’t care

my neighbors love intrigue

i got a wife sleeping in my bed

i got a cat sleeping on my car

i got a throbbing sleeping in my head

but i’m not dead so far

inch by inch i inch through the day the

days go faster day by day by

day by day i live by the inch

it’s just an inch away

just a day away

just an inch away

i got plans growing on my lawn

i got plans growing in my bed

i got you till the getting’s gone

but when all is done and said

inch by inch it’s a struggle

day by day it’s a day away

minute to minute

i’m afraid i’ll never get past right here

Behind

the Song

This is a song about suburban angst. The angst of...

About Song

...having a career with clients, of being a homeowner with neighbors, of being a dad and husband and owning cars, pets and lawns. And feeling totally stuck. It’s an anxious song about middle-class privilege and success, the anxiety no less real despite the privilege. I hope you can relate.

Thank you to The Leeg for your wonderful performances on this. And to Randy Rood and Jimi Fischer for focusing their razor-sharp ears in helping me perfect the mix.
