THE COMMENTARY
LYRICS
you sit on my shoulder
whispering, “you will succumb to me tonight”
you’re such a scolder, always daring me to give your apple a bite
you slide, you slither, you glide across my ankle, you ride up my leg
you tease, “come hither”
i freeze, i get down on my knees and i beg
i’m beggin’ you…
mary mary, you’re my angel in mourning
you’re my devil in bed
i should have heeded the warning
i had to have you instead
you smile sweetly
blurring the boundaries that should be so clear
you talk discreetly
purring the words that I want to hear
you wink, you rub me
you slink into my lap and then you settle in warm
i blink, you snub me
i shrink back, what the hell, you make it hard to perform
mary mary, come and give me your blessing
you’re the only one who can save me
instead you’re always undressing
you enslave me
mary, you’re my angel in mourning
you’re my devil in bed
i should have heeded the warning
i had to have you instead
mary,
my hidden pleasure
my guilty treasure
my secret room
mary
my saint delilah
hair flying while astride my bedroom broom
you’re up in my elm tree
whistling to me “why don’t you come with me tonight”
you overwhelm me
i’m scared of ruffled feathers, afraid you’ll take flight
you preen, you flutter, serene under the covers
you’re leaning my way
unseen, i shudder,
i mean you make me mutter things that i shouldn’t say
mary mary, come and give me your blessing
you’re the only one who can save me
instead you’re always undressing
you enslave me
mary, you’re my angel in mourning
you’re my devil in bed
i should have heeded the warning
the sirens in my head
i had to have you instead

Behind
the Song
I am a huge fan of the ‘90s band Soul Coughing and on one of their albums...

…there is a song called Soundtrack to Mary. I especially love the bass and drums in that song, so I decided to write a song in which I took my inspiration from those two things. My song is at a faster tempo. In a major rather than a minor key. And though my own first drum tracks were modeled directly after those of Yuval Gabay, Soul Coughing’s drummer, snare drum without the snare engaged, I turned the actual performance over to our amazing drummer, Greg Moye who gave it his own style. But what was the song going to be about? I took the name Mary from them and then wrote the lyric. I have no idea where it came from; it just spilled out, surprising me as much as it may surprise you.
Thank you to The Leeg, to Pete, Jim and Greg for their talent time and effort on the track.
