LYRICS
i can feel you slippin’ away
like sand through my fingers
like a tear from my eye
i can feel you slippin’ away
your sweet scent lingers
no matter how i try
i can’t make you stay
i can feel you slippin’ away
so i won’t make you stay
you’ve got your own way of thinking
your own way to talk
you’ve got your own way of slinking
you kinda slither when you walk
you’ve got your own way of teasing
it’s just your way of staying ahead
i can feel you slippin’ away
like sand through my fingers
like a tear from my eye
i can feel you slippin’ away
your scent lingers
no matter how i try
i can’t make you stay
i can feel you slippin’ away
so i won’t make you stay
you’ve got your own way of smiling
that cute little smirk
you kinda think you’re beguiling
i like to watch you going to work
you’ve got your own way of waiting
it’s just your way of staying ahead
i’m always one thought behind you
one word late
though i keep trying to find you
you won’t wait
and i can’t take the teasing
i can’t take the lying in bed
i can feel you slippin’ away
like sand through my fingers
a big fat tear from my eye
i can feel you slippin’ away
your smell lingers
no matter how i try
i can’t make you stay
i can feel you slippin’ away
so i won’t make you stay

Behind the Song

I have no memory of writing this lyric, then one day...
...I wanted to write a song, so I went through my folder of lyrical scraps and I came across this lyric, which had myself attributed as the writer. But I don’t know when. I don’t know where. I don’t know why. No memory of it at all.
But it’s fun. Peter Harris thinks the song should be subtitled “Big Fat Tear”. And that’s the sense of it. At first one thinks this is a song lamenting the leaving of the singer’s girlfriend, but as it goes on it subtly changes. “Your sweet scent lingers” becomes “Your scent lingers” becomes “Your smell lingers.”
She’s pretty awful, a tease, a game player, always late, always playing you. We all know this person. Cute. Sexy. Dangerous. Not to be trusted. See ya.
Special thanks to the boys in the Leeg, and to Nathan and Jimi for their terrific vocals.
